Located in the southern part of Quintana Roo state, in what is known as the lake regionThe ancient population, who spoke maya, gave the area its name of "coloured corn".  Apart from important Maya remains the site has very tall trees which are covered with hay and which principally CONFIEREN meet over the paths, making it quite beautiful; among the species of trees which are present are sapodilla plum, figs, peppers, RAMONES, CHACAS, COROZOS, white cedar and mahogany along with a great number of singing birds and tucans.

Bacalar

Bacalar town is located just over an hour away from Mahahual and a 30 minute drive to the northeast of Chetumal city.
Bacalar is a picuresque community where lovers of nature, aventure, history and culture are found in perfect harmonyThere is great potential to develop adventure, cultural and historical tourism. Bacalar is found on the border of the well-known "Lake of Seven Colours".  It's large lagoon system allows  aquatic communication between the villages of Xul-Ha, Buenavista, Laguna Milagros, Rio Hondo and Chetumal Bay through the affluent Huay-Pix river.

Chetumal
The capital of Quintana Roo state, was founded only a little more than a century ago.  The houses were wooden English style due to the distinct British influence in nearby Belize. Afterwards came the commercial growth of the city, as it was a duty-free zone and sold impo
rts at a good price.

Thanks to this wealth it became the state government's headquarters.   Later they looked for the way to give it more character, which wasn't based on the decadence of commercialism, and this place became a kind of entrance to the Mayan world.

Kohunlich
Located 69 kilometres to the west of Chetumal city, the state's capital.  It can be reached by federal highway 186 Chetumal - Escarcega; when arriving at kilometre 60, at the town of Franciso Villa, you have to take the turning which will lead you to the site 9 kms away.

The prehispanic city is located in the low-lands of the southern maya area, in a zone where it's possible to see the presence of certain links with other regions of the Maya world, particularly of the Guatamalan Peten and Campeche's Rio Bec.  But Kohunlich is not simply about the mix of diverse influences, as it has it's own style, in it's architecture along with it's icons and the production of ceramics.

The site was founded in 200 B.C., when some masonry platforms were built in the area next to Ya'axna, the oldest settlement.  Later and until the last part of the early classic period (approx. 500 - 600 A.C.) the site appears to have been converted into a city of some importance as the Temple of Masks was built, an ornate structure originally with eight stucco masks (of which only five remain), and considered one of the finest of the Maya icons of this period.  The symbolic message of these masks is very complicated and has been given to numerous interpretations, converting themselves into one of the most characteristic images to date
.
